The tech community, even marketers, is certainly focused on “big data”, analytics, and guiding business decisions from numbers scraped from their consumer’s online behavior. There is nothing wrong with this viewpoint.
Go. Collect all of the data. Track the right indicators to grow your business.
Data and logic may not always rationally fit with the irrational world. Sometimes feeling, intuition, freedom of choice, and other strong emotional triggers over rule the data.
A good example is this site. I’ve changed the design many times over the years. All the while a certain percentage (and growing) will never “see” any design change because they receive updates through e-mail or RSS. Why? Certainly not because Google will reward it with a higher search ranking. No, it’s just to continually make it a little better for those who still drop by and shouldn’t that be the goal of any endeavor?
