Confronting the mayhem in Media and Marketing

Mobile Barcode Grader: Best Buy Back to School

Mobile Barcode Grade: 4 out of 10

Best Buy continues to experiment with using QR Codes. You might remember the earlier campaign they ran with Samsung linking to a video of a washing machine. This time around Best Buy is trying to promote their own wares in a Back to School promotion.

Unfortunately, Best Buy has not learned much from previous mobile barcode attempts. The code takes you to a full sized web page that is just a mashup of technology items that students might use.

If I am a student or parent of a student, there is no built-in mechanism for comparing or sharing the products in a collaborative way. I cannot create a “wish list” and then share it through any social networks or e-mail. Such a feature would be useful for students trying to convince their parents to buy them a shiny, new Macbook.
