Airline Apps – Most airlines now have a mobile application to search & book flights, electronically check-in, etc.

TripIt is an aggregator of all your trip details. It also works with Concur which many businesses use to book their travel.

Trip Advisor lets you check out ratings and reviews for just about anything at your destination.

FlightAware tracks flights so you can see if it is on time or not.

Kayak and Hipmunk are both aggregators of flight information useful for booking. Note that Southwest Airlines is absent from both but you can still use their own app.

Mint is an aggregator of your various financial accounts for viewing your balances and setting budget alerts but many banks also have their own app that allows for money transfers. You can also transfer funds through Paypal.

The Weather Channel is the defacto weather app for the US. Try wetter.com for Europe.

Starbucks app lets you manage your account and pay with your phone.

Expensify is an app for managing expense, mileage, scanning receipts and business cards. The only charge is for automatic scanning of your receipts.

Communication

Skype Kik Messenger Google Voice Citrix GoToMeeting Cisco Webex
Team Viewer Meetings

Skype is the go to app for free skype-to-skype audio or video calls (preferably over Wi-Fi) or at low international rates.

Google Voice gives you a free telephone number that can then route to all your other numbers (office, home, mobile). The service includes voicemail which is transcribed, sent to your e-mail/app, and viewable online.

Kik Messenger, available on iOS also, allows you to avoid text messaging limits/rates why sending to others who have the app.

GoToMeeting, Webex, and Team Viewer Meetings are all apps to host or attend webinar sessions. Only Team Viewer is free at the moment.

Utilities and Productivity

Team Viewer AirDroid Battery Widget Amazon Price Checker RedLaser Barcode Scanner
dropbox evernote adoberead lookout
Dropbox Evernote Documents to Go Acrobat Reader Lookout Security & Antivirus

Team Viewer is a free alternative to LogMeIn that allows remote access to another computer.

AirDroid lets you configure and backup your phone through a web browser over a local network.

Battery Widget gives you more feedback and better visuals about your phone’s battery life.

Amazon Price Checker allows you to scan a product in a store and compare it with Amazon’s lowest price.

RedLaser is a reliable mobile barcode (QR Code) scanner.

Dropbox and Evernote are both digital lockers to keep all of your stuff in the “cloud” so you can access it from any Internet connection. Great for syncing documents on multiple computers and viewing on the go.

Documents to Go allows you to view MS Office documents. Acrobat Reader allows you to view PDFs.

Lookout Security & Antivirus gives you another level of protection.

Those are great apps for trip planning, keeping connected and keeping up on work, but where are the apps for entertainment? On recent trips I have been stuck in an air port (thanks to lots of snow at Denver International Airport), stuck in a hotel (again, thanks to snow) and stuck in the passenger seat on a long road trip. I would have gone absolutely insane if I didn’t have a tablet loaded with the free DISH Remote Access app from DISH, my employer. I can connect to my home DVR through a Sling Adapter in order to stream any live TV channel or any DVR recording as long as I have access to 3g, 4g or WIFI. I can basically take my full satellite service with me where ever I go. It is a must have for any one who travels a lot or anyone who would like to watch TV away from home.

      Hi Adam,
Other than the fact that your employer should enjoy the promotional plug, your point is taken. Sometimes you can find yourself stuck somewhere you really don’t want to be. In those cases, I usually opt for a podcast or Netflix.
