Confronting the mayhem in Media and Marketing

The Print Side of Hewlett Packard

In light of last weeks surprising announcement to drop WebOS hardware and look to spinoff or find a buyer for their Personal Systems Group by Hewlett Packard, I thought it would be relevant to contrast this news with the forward progress of their Graphic Arts division. On a financial note, the Graphic Arts commercial equipment has seen a little over 4% growth in the past nine months whereas their consumer printers have lost ground. Considering the financial growth of the commercial side, I would expect HP to continue to focus on innovation in this area.

Hewlett Packards Inkjet Web Press Timeline

2009

  • T300 30″ Inkjet Web Press at Print09

2010

  • IPEX 2010: T200 press is introduced, release date early 2011. 20.5″ web width
  • T350 evolution upgrade form the T300 announced

2011

  • T400 40″ Inkjet Web Press unveiled at O’Neil Data Systems in March
  • Graph Expo: ????

In about three years time HP has increased the paper web width by over 30% and the speed by 1.5 times. Considering that HP has used Graph Expo/Print IPEX (see comments below) to launch new inkjet web products in the past, one has to wonder what might be in store this year?

HP’s commercial print operations are a strong area of growth, initially through its acquisition of Indigo, a division that has seen continuous growth over many years, however in recent years growth has come from its IHPS web printing division. You are however wrong in one comment in your article. HP has never used GraphExpo to launch any of its web printing products. They are usually launched at major European events like drupa or at special HP exclusive events such as the event in Los Angeles at O’Neil Data Systems to launch the T400. GraphExpo has just been used for the first public showings of these presses in North America so don’t expect anything new at the show. Apart from the T200 press, GraphExpo is too small and too short a show to assemble a full large web press.

As usual, you are spot on! Thanks for keeping me on point.

HP has not introduced any of the IHPS equipment at Graph/Print. I meant to say IPEX at the end there.

On another note, I hope to see/meet you at Graph this year.
