“You’ll be the same person in 10 years except for the people you meet and the books you read”, is a favorite quote of personal finance guru Dave Ramsey.

UPDATE: Contest Ended

My 2009 reading list stands at 27 books (a considerable feat considering the previous year was less than 5) so far with the possibility of squeaking in a few more before years’ end. Below are books that, in my opinion, offer critical viewpoints for consideration of any size business in any industry. Links to posts, written throughout the year on m-Bossed, pertaining to these subjects can be found below each book’s summary.

Hands down, the best book
I read in 2009. Anderson illustrates why businesses cannot ignore the
forces of free and offers suggestions on how to monetize around a free
model. Think you are immune to free competition? If it can be
digitized, it can and wants to be free.

The
Business of Free: The Free Generation

The
Business of Free: Then and Now

The
Business of Free: What’s your Model?

The
Business of Free: How’s that Free?

The
Business of Free: Psyched Out

Both
The Tipping Point and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell are worth reading. He
offers food for thought with a conterperspective on traditional ways of
thinking. The pyschological though process of decisions made in “the
blink of an eye” probably made Blink and even better read.

A tale of a startup,
Terracycle, that turned waste into dollars while greening the
environment – not bad attributes to combine.

A must read for anyone
interested in life cycle design or the green movement.

Feel like you are missing
the point or the need for better conversations with your customers
through blogs? This book strips the mystery of the blogosphere into
concrete descriptions and supporting facts of why you cannot ignore the
need for these new conversations.

How to Get a Free Book

As a bonus, I will be giving away one copy of Chris Anderson’s Free: The Future of a Radical Price to a lucky commenter. Leave a comment about the best use of free you have seen used by any company during 2009. Since we are also talking about books, you can choose to also share your favorite book read this past year.

Comment:

  1. What is the best use of free by a company or marketing campaign in 2009?
  2. What is the best book you read in 2009? (optional)
