Pretty Codes

A few weeks ago, I commented on the use of 2D barcodes. The most popular implementation of this at the moment is the QR code for Quick Response. Anyone equipped with a smartphone and the appropriate software can take a picture of this special barcode and be directed to various online content. Pretty cool except that the codes are visually glaring, sticking out like a sore thumb as compared with the rest of the design. Jane McPherson, from SpyderLynk, commented about their implementation of special barcoding that puts a patterned ring around any object. Although this approach offers advantages over QR codes and is far less jarring to the eye, the SnapTag technology still has limitations on the size, shape, placement, and background color of the design.

Barcodes can be rethought, however, as a recent post at the Dieline.com shows (also via PopSop). Leave it to the Japanese, where most of the 2D barcode activity has happened, to show us creativity in barcodes – albeit with the traditional type. It probably will not be long before this same creativity flows over into 2D barcode arena.
